I encourage anyone who’s reading this to look at the rest of these works here. This was a display at MOCA, but sadly it’s gone now.
It wasn’t until recently that I really thought about “graffiti” as being art. Let alone public art. This is probably because I have only really been exposed to people tagging things that shouldn’t be tagged in order to be cool. Well, that’s not cool. But public art is.
I think graffiti can actually be beautiful. If it’s done right, it really is a very unique art form. The only down side is that more often than not it ends up in places that it shouldn’t. And more often than not, it’s not beautiful, or artistic, it’s just, graffiti.
The solution, in my head, is a place FOR public art. For people to go there. Make a mess. Make art. Tag their tags. Do whatever. Let it stay there for a few months, then it gets wiped clean and the process starts over again. I have this crazy idea that if you allow people to do what they want to do, they’re not going to feel the need to start spray painting important things that should remain in their natural state.
